About Sex, But Not – ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ (1984)

24 Sep

ON THE SURFACE – A group of teens are terrorized by a serial killer that appears in their dreams.

SCRAPING THE BARREL – A group of teens are anxious about losing their virginity and starting sexual relationships. Is Freddy Krueger a serial killer? No. Freddy is the personification of the female character’s anxiety about losing their virginity and what their first time will entail. Note how many times Freddy goes slashing through fabric or dust covers. That’s the girl’s worrying about what he’s going to be doing to their hymen once sex begins. Tina (Amanda Wyss) gives in to her desire to become an adult (her and her boyfriend use her mother’s bed and not hers) and suffers for it. See how violent Freddy gets with her under the sheets (sex), how bloody it all becomes (breaking her hymen) and how much she screams (in pain)? All female teenage worries. It affects her best friend Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) so much that she decides to avoid having sex, resisting Freddy at all costs and setting down traps (using contraception) to try to make it less traumatic. In the end she wins by using simple mind tricks to deflate the male ego; ‘You’re nothing. You’re shit’. Just what you want to hear when you’re trying to have sex…
